THE POWER OF WORDS
THE BRAIN IS THE BRIDGE
I recently had a conversation with someone about the fact that they were not being truthful for quite sometime during our relationship. I used an example of some things they had written to me and others in the past to illustrate the discrepancy between what they said and what they actually did. They responded by saying that they thought the power of words depended on how well someone knows themselves.
My first reaction was to think that it was just a cop out and a way of not taking any responsibility for the their choices. On second thought I realized that if someone is continually dishonest or out of integrity with their actions, that they are actually convinced by the patterns or the filters they live by, into believing they are doing the right thing at the time.
We all operate with a majority of subconscious beliefs and behaviors gathered from birth. A recent statistic used the example that our brains are basically like those of a 3 year old! Knowing this can be helpful in finding compassion and understanding for things we have no control over, such as the behavior of others. Ultimately we can only take care of ourselves.
I have been exploring the latest findings on brain research, particularly in the area of neuroplasticity, both intellectually and experientially. My interest began many years ago with meditation and teaching yoga for over 25 years. I also trained and explored in many alternative energy-healing techniques including shamanism and have found that these practices also tap into the idea of learning, experiencing or knowing things in more expanded ways.
We have known for a long time that by using all the senses while being present during an experience, our ability to know things on a much deeper level is expanded greatly. Rather than simply thinking about them or understanding them only on a mental level we can take in new dimensions of our being. One way of describing this is often called groking or understanding on a total body/mind level.
We now know that by learning new words, concepts or ways of receiving information, the brain begins to form new neural pathways in order to store the new “language” that has been introduced. Artists and inventors have known this for centuries as being in the flow or bridging our awareness to a greater level of allowing inspiration or higher mind to move through us.
THE EYES OF YOUR MIND
In the last couple of years I discovered people who were intuitively channeling something called light language, both audibly and in text. Light Language is a form of multidimensional communication said to be a pathway one can receive information through direct revelation, similar to shamanic journeying. It is said to bypass the patterned mental route and connects us to our hearts allowing us to be conscious on a deeper level of knowing.
I have also been using brain re-patterning technology through a company called NeuroGym and listened to a recording by Dr. Srini Pillay, CEO of NeuroBusiness Group that had some simple yet powerful techniques for brain re-training. Dr. Pillay is one of the top researches in leadership development right now in which he suggests a method, based on years of research, for building and fine tuning our brains to better help us to achieve our dreams and goals and at the same time reducing stress and anxiety.
The method is called CIRCA and is composed of 5 parts.
- Chunking or breaking our thoughts, worries and fears down into small doable steps.
- Ignoring Thoughts or mental chatter and focusing on the breath at least twice a day.
- Reality Check or being present and reminding yourself that “this too shall pass”.
- Control Check or remembering that we cannot control everything. (Serenity Prayer)
- Attention Shift or redirecting our focus to the solution rather than the problem.
There is so much more to be explored in the field of neuroplasticicy and so much more than science understands at this point in time. We may have inherited the basic survival patterns of fight, flight or flee but isn’t it wonderful to know that our brain actually craves newness and adventure? Simply by learning something new, focusing on our breath and being aware, we are re-directing more flood flow to the pre-frontal cortex rather than the amigdala or the thinking brain and creating new pathways in which we can not only expand our knowledge but also nurture our body and our brains!
ARTISAN MATERIALS EXPO 2016: A Huge Success!
I taught two, well attended and fabulous encaustic classes for the Artist Materials Expo: Creative Ascension, at the beautiful Buffalo Thunder Resort in Santa Fe! Along with other top instructors, both local and from around the country, it was a wonderful opportunity to meet new and seasoned students who continue to explore the boundaries of encaustic painting and monoprinting.
Thank you EAI for your support in putting the tech together and making sure that everything flowed smoothly! The next Expo is scheduled for September 27-30, 2018. The admission is free for the vendor floor, which features 80 manufacturers’ booths. For info: ExpoArtisan.com
EAI-IEA JURIED SHOW: Making Your Mark
What a joy to have my panels entitled, Ancient Past, displayed along with incredible work from artists around the country, including gorgeous sculptures from local artists as well.
We had a full house for the opening at the Encaustic Art Institute in Santa Fe on September 30th and juried by David Limrite, who was present to share his knowledge and process with us.
The exhibit is now showing through October 23, 2016. My dyptich Ancient Past is 2-12×12 birch panels of beeswax, resin and pigment and are for sale in the EAI gallery.
