Birch trees are symbolic of the one who never stops wondering. They remind us of our childlike innocence and our inner resolve to adventure beyond the confines of the ordinary world. This ability sparks the imagination and heralds a time of new beginnings for the body, mind and soul.
In Celtic mythology, birch is also a tree of beginnings and came to symbolise renewal and purification. Birch or Beithe, is the first tree of the Ogham, the Celtic tree alphabet. It was celebrated during the festival of Samhain (what is now Halloween in Britain).
Gourd represents the earth, and the handle area is the axis of the Hero Twins, iconic figures of ancient Mayan lore who help keep the earth spinning. Of the squash family, gourd or askutasguash, has the honor of being the seed carrier, Divine Mother and the spark of life.
